Amjad Khan has been specially acclaimed for playing numerous negative roles in his film career which spanned over twenty years. He is most remembered for playing the character of Gabbar, the dacoit leader in the film Sholay (1975). Amjad Khan was born in Hyderabad to the well known actor Jayant and he started his film career as a child artist in the film Ab Dili Dur Nahin. Before making his debut in the film Hindustan ki kasam (1973), he had done a stint in theaters. He was awarded the Filmfare Award for best performance in a villainous role on several occasions, and a National Award for his portrayal of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in Satayjit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi. He passed away as a result of heart failure at the age of 51.
