Amrish Puri, born in a Punjabi family, was an Indian film actor who has worked in over 400 movies in his career. While he has played many memorable character roles, it might be argued that his true forte lied in playing negative roles. He had an impressive bass voice and a certain authority in his acting. Mogambo, the character he played in the superhit Mr India brought him widespread popularity. He has lent voice for several animation films as well. Amrish Puri is one of the few Indian actors who has done some quality roles in Hollywood Productions. Notable among them are Sir Richard Attenborough's Oscar winning film Gandhi (1982) and Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and The Temple Of The Doom (1984). Beginning with a very humble background and no connections in the industry, he worked his way up with a lot of perseverance and discipline. He had a passion for collecting hats and had a collection of around 200 hats.
