Uma is an orphan who lives with her uncle. A mute since birth, she would still have no problem in finding a good husband who would care for her, were it not for her horoscope which clearly indicates that her husband would die within a short time of their marriage. However, an astrological solution is found and Uma is married off to a nearby banyan tree. One rainy day, finding himself momentarily alone with Uma in the house, the highly respected village school teacher cannot resist the opportunity and has sex with the uncomprehending girl. She becomes pregnant and the womenfolk of the household begin to treat her like an outcaste.
