Roseland (1977) Country: United States Language: English Year: 1977 Color/BW: COLOR Category: Feature Film Genre: Drama, Musical Description New York's legendary ballroom, Roseland, provides both the real-life setting and the inspiration for Merchant Ivory Productions' 1977 feature, a haunting trilogy of bitter-sweet love stories.
Starring a fine cast of movie veterans and rising young talent, including Oscar winners CHRISTOPHER WALKEN and TERESA WRIGHT, ROSELAND is made up of three 'vignettes'. In ''The Waltz'' a grieving widow is given one last unexpected shot at happiness. In ''The Hustle'' three women compete for the attentions of a charming but feckless gigolo; and in ''The Peabody'' the irrepressible Rosa, an elderly Viennese refugee, literally whirls her skinny little dance partner into the grave. Interwoven with these stories are glimpses of the real-life Roseland: dance competitions, socializing, and people - young and old - searching for the right partner.
Shot through with pathos, humor and a tough irony, ROSELAND remains one of the Merchant Ivory team's most individual and touching creations.
