Farooq is a Indian actor with some memorable films in the 1970s and 1980s. Farooq was studying law when MS Sathyu, a senior director at the Indian Peoples' Theatre Association (IPTA) with which Farooq was associated during his college years, offered him a role in ‘Garam Hawa’ in the year 1973 which turned out to be a success. He then went on to star in a number of classic films such as ‘Noorie’, ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’, ‘Chashm-e-Baddoor’, ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Saath Saath’ & ‘Bazaar’. Popular mostly for his comic image, Farooq has also starred in a number of State Plays. He played a lead role in the play ‘Tumhari Amrita’, which remains one his most noteworthy theatre performance.
